Lazing on a sunny afternoon
With the sun on my face I finally managed to finish Birdsong. It was a hard read. Below is my review – also on @Goodreads
Review – Birdsong – Sebastian Faulks
This tale is of love, war, and ultimately loss. I have written this review for Goodreads and it was cancelled. So I will start again.
I loathe war. I had to put this novel away and start several times over before completing.
War serves no-one but the warmonger who are tripping on power and greed. They will never be seen in the trenches. They will never feel the pain of loss. They will never experience having a foot blown off, or burned beyond recognition without receiving adequate care. They will never see a family member covered in lice or crap or their head blown off and know the grief. Only soldiers who have been there will understand.
I take my hat off to those who have been able to share their story, without them the integrity of the truth of this novel would not have taken legs. Mr Faulks have given those people a voice. For this purpose alone Birdsong is an important piece of literature.
Sadly though as a story the narrative lacked the emotion that made me want to cry to reach out and say stop. However, I will continue to vilify warmongers. I will continue to repeat WAR HAS NO WINNERS. In short this novel offers the reader a light insight into the sounds, smells and horrors that no-one should ever have to experience.
With the sun on my face I managed, finally to finish Birdsong. It was hard. Really hard. I kept putting it down. Most unusual for me. Below you will find my review – also on @Goodreads
