You want to write a novel

So, you want to write a novel? Well, first find the plot –sprinkle in a variety of believable characters and start writing: ‘one word at a time – it’s that easy and that hard:’ Neil Gaiman.

Writing is a lonely occupation.

Surround yourself with like-minded people.

If you haven’t already – attend a creative writing course – the one I joined was run by my local Further Education College. Universities also put on a good show – they even do weekenders.

Join at least one writing group – I started up two writing groups and they are still going strong. A good group will give constructive feedback. Though you may think constructive feedback hurts, it’s a fabulous learning device and comes free. If you can’t take constructive feedback, then you need to ask yourself why.

What are you afraid of?

There are MILLIONS of budding authors out there. Competition is fierce. We all must compete – and that also means with the rich and famous, including those who are already writing stars, published, and at the top of their game.

I suggest you check out Amazon OR Waterstones and the smaller, wonderful little bookshops, and find out exactly how many books are on the market and how many actually sell.

Am I put off – nah just keep writing – its free therapy if nothing else!

Hi, i read your blog from time to time and i own a similar one and i was just wondering if you get a lot of spam feedback? If so how do you reduce it, any plugin or anything you can recommend? I get so much lately it's driving me insane so any assistance is very much appreciated.

I have just posted Billy goat gruff. I know. I understand and empathise! I think someone posted about plug ins - I'm not sure if you can see any of the comments posted on my blog other than reading my response? The post we are talking about I can only offer. If you have any other ideas maybe we could share them?

It's very straightforward to find out any matter on web as compared to books, as I found this post at this web site.

Yes. I agree. I just wanted to share my own journey for budding writers to know they can get their work out there if they believe in themselves :)

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said "You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear." She placed the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is entirely off topic but I had to tell someone!

That is fab Dinah! I love it. Just imagine turning that one into a story? I hope you write. It would be brilliant for children - a bit like Grimm brothers fairy tales. thank you for sharing!

Having read this I thought it was really enlightening. I appreciate you spending some time and effort to put this content together. I once again find myself personally spending way too much time both reading and posting comments. But so what, it was still worthwhile!
